The United Hungarian House was honored to provide the LA home for one of the 20 Semmelweis statues, donated by the Semmelweis University to different locations of the world, in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Ignaz Semmelweis. The legacy of Dr. Semmelweis, a Hungarian OB-GYN, was created by his realization of using chlorine solution for hand hygiene and hospital laundry can prevent puerperal fever/maternal sepsis leading to maternal death. He became widely recognized as the “Savior of Mothers”, and ever since this distinguished title has been owned by Dr. Semmelweis exclusively. His willingness to listen to his patients, recognizing unconventional and uncharted paths, passionately searching for explanations and creating solutions made him a symbol of how to combine science and humanity successfully in medicine. His discovery paved the road to modern day’s epidemiology and bacteriology.
